Welcome to "Les Libellules" the self catering Gîte named for the Dragonflies that can be seen flying over the river right next to our garden.

Situated between Carcassonne and Toulouse. Near Carcassonne but not under the flight path, we have the luxury of being near to the airport (20 kms) but still being tranquil and quiet.

The village of Montolieu (the name comes from the occitan Mont a Ouliou - Mount of Olives) is situated in the foothills of the Montagne Noir, that's about 16 kms from the city of Carcassonne, with its wonderfully preserved medieval castle.

Montolieu is known the world over as "Le Village de Livre" (The Village of Books) and has been a centre for book selling and binding since 1989. There are many shops selling books both ancient and modern and a museum that specializes in the history of everything to do with books.

The village resides on an outcropping of rock high above two rivers, the "Alzeau" and the "Dure". They join just above our house by a small waterfall  easily visible from our rear balcony and continues on as "La Rougeanne" which runs directly by the garden.

The decking in the lower garden is therefore provided one of the best water features possible, and something very important to remember, the Mosquitoes are not to be found in abundance as the river flows quite rapidly.

It's a wonderful place to spend quality time just relaxing and enjoying the peace and quiet of the Languedoc as we have very little traffic passing by the house. It's situated in a small Chemin leading to a farm about 1 km distant. The swimming pool is available from May to September and during that time doesn't require heating and can reach 29° C. After a day sightseeing it's great to just cool down. 

Although this is a self catering holiday  there are plenty of excellent restaurants nearby. 

In Montolieu, within easy walking distance, there are 2 restaurants, a café, the usual grocery store (Chez Nelly), a Patisserie and a Tabac. We also have a Chemist and large medical practice should you unfortunately need it. The major supermarkets and shops of Carcassonne are a short 15 minute drive.

However it's not just the books, wine and restaurants that attract visitors to Montolieu, there are also the Chateaux and ancient Castles of the Cathares situated nearby, the Cité of Carcassonne is an amazing site to visit, the Mediterranean and it's beaches are less than an hour away, Spain and Andorra beckon and are also only a couple of hours by car.

The location makes "Les Libellules de Montolieu" the perfect base for your visits to the restaurants and vineyards of the largest wine growing area of France and for house hunting in one of the most picturesque settings in the Languedoc.

Les Libellules provides self catering Gite style accommodation near the town of Carcassonne and is intended for parties of up to four persons wishing to enjoy a relaxing self catering break with usage of a swimming pool. Whilst still being near to Cities like Carcassonne and Toulouse. The owners have contact with other self catering Gites that may or may not have a swimming pool. So if Les Libellules cannot provide you with self catering accommodation we can pass on your enquiry to other Gites that we know and can recommend, if you so wish.
